Team Ratings

The Pascal Rating measures team strength from completed games. Each sport uses its own method, and every sport uses a 100-centered scale on which higher is better. In the NFL and college football, we turn the rating into a win probability for each game and score it against the closing line in public.

Before you use them

  • Compare teams within one sport and one view; rating points do not carry across sports.
  • A rating describes team strength. In the NFL and college football it converts to a calibrated win probability for each game, and each of those pages keeps a season record against the closing line. For MLB, the NBA, the NHL, and men's college basketball we do not publish game forecasts yet, and the rating is not itself a win probability.
  • Ratings are not betting advice.
  • Each table shows the date its data runs through. Ratings change when new completed games are processed, not on a fixed clock.
  • In retrospective tests, higher-rated teams won more often, but individual games vary widely.

Turn a rating into a model you can test

A rating describes team strength. A personal workflow lets you define how evidence enters a model and test that exact version.
